If you are able to establish a connection with your recorder, the device should be within a proximity of approximately 10 meters from your current location.
When you don't have the device nearby, you can not connect it to your app. Maybe you can turn on the Recording signal light and start a recording with VAR mode on the app. The indicator light will flash red when it is in VAR mode, allowing you to position your recorder based on the lighting.
